“The Ability to Create Something to Which Someone Else Feels a Connection”

A solitary bench at the river’s edge
silently standing guard over
late-winter’s melting ice floes...

That fleeting time of day
when evening settles upon us
like a comfortable blanket
of muted hues and hushed light...

The sun’s rays of late-autumn casting
a golden glow on an open field
awaiting the first frost of the season...

One of the basic reasons for creating art is it invites the artist, as well as the viewer, to pay attention to simple, but evocative aspects of our lives. For me, capturing the quality and intensity of the moment is best accomplished by painting au plein air with pastels. Atmosphere becomes a very important design element in my landscapes. The atmospheric effects of light and color give the art a glow of mystery and luminescence. By continually trying new approaches with color relationships and fresh visual images the pastel paintings I create offer a synergy of image and emotion that inspire, instruct and impress.
